A: Yes, a unit can use any of its abilities the turn it is played. The restriction that prevents units from attacking the turn they are played does not prevent units from using their abilities.
Q: Can a unit that is exhausted be assigned as a defender?
A: No, exhausted units cannot be assigned as defenders.
Q: When a unit is assigned as a defender, does it become exhausted?
A: No, a unit does not become exhausted when it defends. If the unit lives through the battle, it is free to defend in subsequent battles that turn.
Q: Can a unit defend in a battle, and then before damage is dealt, use an ability that exhausts it?
A: Yes, a defending unit can use abilities that cause it to exhaust, after it is assigned as a defender and before damage is dealt. The unit would still deal damage in that battle.
